I. Upon Arrival
The Right Oil
Use a food-safe mineral oil only.
Avoid cooking oils (olive, vegetable, etc.) as they can go rancid over time.
You can find suitable oils easily online or at most kitchen or hardware stores.
For a board of this size, approximately 8 oz (≈ 240 ml) is sufficient for the initial saturation.
Initial Oiling Process
Apply oil generously, covering all surfaces
Let it absorb fully
Wipe off excess
Repeat once per day for about a week, or until the wood no longer absorbs easily
Take your time here — this step defines the long-term stability of the board.
Water Drop Test
To check if your board is ready:
Place a few drops of water on the surface
If the water beads, the board is properly sealed
If the water absorbs into the wood, continue oiling
II. Maintenance
Cleaning
Hand wash only
Use lukewarm water and minimal moisture
Never soak or leave in standing water
Drying
Dry immediately after washing
Let the board breathe freely
Ensure air circulates on both sides for even drying
Avoid leaving the board flat on a wet surface.
Re-Oiling
Repeat the water drop test periodically.
If water begins to absorb, reapply oil
Regular oiling maintains protection and appearance
A board wax (oil + wax blend) can be applied optionally for added surface protection and a richer finish.
III. Pro Tips
Natural Deodorizing
Like in the old country ~
Sprinkle coarse salt on the surface
Use half a lemon to scrub the board
Rinse lightly and dry thoroughly
The lemon juice will evaporate, leaving a clean, fresh scent.
Early Use Precaution
During the first weeks:
Avoid cutting water-rich foods (like tomatoes) directly on the board.
Focus on dry foods while the wood continues to stabilize.
After consistent oiling and use, the board will handle all foods normally.
Smart Flip Side Usage
Use both sides of the board regularly. Maybe one side for meat, the other for veggies.
This helps to maintain balanced moisture exposure and reduce the risk of warping over time
Also, avoid exposing one side to heat or moisture for extended periods (e.g., placing it near a stove or sink).
